I have been organic gardening since 1970. Preserving foods and cooking whole and homegrown foods. I also have recipies for whole grain cooking, using seaweeds and algaes, re-creating our ancestral diet: a rainbow plate for healthy eating.
It seems to me we need a new word for "diet." Diet used to mean, "what a person or animal usually eats and drinks, daily fare." It's now gotten a negative spin with "going on a diet" to lose weight or if a Dr. puts someone on a "special diet" to lower cholesterol.
So....we need a new word for a new way of eating, actually an old way, an anciet way, one we need to get BACK to if we want to be healthy by nourishing the body.
Susan Weed, in her book "Healing Wise" calls it the "Wise Woman's" way. She says it's invisible.
"A woman making dinner is invisible. To claim that she is engaged in healing her family and community and keeping her universe in balance is a lot to claim for dinner. This is the Wise Woman way."
Another meaning of the word "diet" is "days journey". Interesing-- a journey is invisible if it is all happening in one place. Invisible until you see your blood in a microscope that is. I suppose most smokers would quit smoking if they could see their lungs in a microscope. And like a smoker, we are bombarded with ads for food. Ad blitzes to eat this and so chips or fast food or low fat artificial substance or whatever ... The list goes on and on. THAT is a "special diet". THAT is a diet to make you unhealthy.
Other "diets" I've been on (and I have tried quite a few over the years) I always dream about food: smorgasbords, cafeterias, weddings, restaurants! I have yet to have such dreams with the ancestral diet.
For the ancestral diet to work, there are three things that are missing from our Standard American Diet (SAD):
Enzymes-
Fiber (40-45 grams/day!)-
Trace minerals.
All can be had from ancestral foods. Let your invisible journey of health begin!
